My wife and I tried this place, and it was awful. The chili is more like tomato sauce, both the red and green chile were not even spicy at all. My wife ordered the chicken enchiladas, and they gave her ground chicken! She took two bites and left the rest on her plate. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. Buy some burritos from Walmart lol

I think it's time La Cocina and I go our separate ways. I've been hanging out with that same ol' enchilada for about two decades and all I can say is that while I've improved and grown, old enchy has done nothing but gotten boring and lazy. "Look at you! You used to be the ULTIMATE enchilada and now, now your nothing but a $17 dried out bland flavorless pile on a plate. You still have the same ingredients except for the love. Where did the love go?" No heat, a mere speckling of chile, stale tortillas, and minimal cheese precipitated a drying, blandifying effect. I lost my horny.

The place was not bad, waitresses were not very friendly but were efficient. The food was mediocre at best, but I have to admit the RED chili was damn good.

Good food, good prices. I was not that hungry, so got a $4 bean burrito thinking it'd be a quite bite. Well, I got an awesome chili sauce covered plate sized burrito. It was good - that evening, and for lunch the next day haha! I didn't get anything "special" so cannot comment more, but what I had, I was very pleased with.

Disappointing, and pretty gross. I got a combo plate with a beef taco and a pork tamale. Well, it wasn't listed as a pork tamale on the menu, and the waitress admittedly didn't know what was in it. Not very reassuring. The ground beef was horrible; very dry, and with a strange flavor that tasted like reject meat from a fast food joint rather than Mexican cuisine. The pork in the tamale was also dry. You could tell the food had been pre cooked then nuked on demand. I will say that the chips were warm and tasted fresh, and the salsa with them was pretty decent. Best part of the meal was the cold beer.

Based on the recommendation from Los Arcos Steak & Lobster since they were booked, we went to La Cocina. When we walked into we found a tired restaurant that did not smell clean. Hopeful that the food was better, we ordered some beef fajitas. Chips and salsa were brought out and the chips were not fresh and the salsa plain. The fajitas meat was not seasoned and tough and the base of onions were barely cooked enough to soften them. Could not wait to get out of there. Should have gone to Denny's down the street.

This is probably the better of all the restaurants available in this area. I don't feel it fixes authentic Mexican food but it is OK. The American food is very good. The bowl of chips are usually broken pieces and very small bowls. Sometimes the service is slow but the area is lucky to have such a good restaurant.

My husband and I were on the road for a while. It had been a long time since we had seen a place where we could stop and eat. The two of us just about had our fill of Subway salads and Gas Station coffee at this point. Basically, we were totally desperate. From the moment we walked in, it was apparent that La Cocina didn't invest a ton in a coherent decorating 'scheme'. Unpleasant to the eye...that's the best way I can describe it. Everything looked dusty and disheveled. (This includes the employees.) The service was EXTREMELY, PAINSTAKINGLY slow. There really was no reason for it because...not many folk were in there. It's not like they were 'slammed' or anything. The good part was our waitress wasn't rude or dismissive. She was quick with the refills on iced tea, stale chips and awful salsa. (I'm adding one star for her sake) But, there comes a point where you just want to eat the meal you ordered...before you forget WHAT you ordered! MY TWO CENTS: La Cocina claims that their salsa is homemade. Let me give you their secret recipe: The cook grabs a bottle of El Paso salsa, chops up some whitish looking tomatoes, tosses it in there and...wha-la! 'home-made' salsa is born. Blech. La Cocina, you guys can't fool my taste buds. I'm onto your 'home-made' salsa sham. My husband and I ordered a healthier version of their chicken salad. It was a tad better than a Subway salad but...not by much. The beans were decent. Yippie. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this place. But, if you are in the area, there aren't any other restaurants to choose from. So, basically... I feel sorry for you. :(

We lived in Las Cruces for about five years and my husband's work would often take him to Truth or Consequences and he would dine here for lunch. It wasn't until we moved to Albuquerque (2 hours north of T or C) that I finally tried La Cocina and I must say that I was pretty impressed. We enjoy this restaurant so much that we always make it a point to stop and eat here anytime we are traveling to or from Las Cruces (several times per year). The food is pretty good in the scheme of Mexican food - we always get the tacos and they are delightfully cheesy. The chips and salsa are average and the service is sometimes a little on the slow/less friendly side, but overall for the location (small, rural New Mexico) of this restaurant, it is a pretty good experience. Very reasonably priced and good sized portions. If you have some room left after your delicious tacos, try a sopapilla - they are HUGE. I know it seems like a strange recommendation, but this place is a most-stop if you are traveling through on I-25.

Very mediocre overpriced imitation Tex-Mex food. Would not recommend.

This place is not bad, above average for sure. If I could give 3.8 stars I would. I got fajitas with both chicken and steak and they were good. My fiancé got a combo plate and taco and enchilada was good while relleno was NOT good. Very doughy and bland. Red chile was good - green chile not so much. But I'm sure next time we are t or c we will come back. Service was quick and friendly. You're not eating you're Grandmas homemade New Mexican here but it's still pretty decent.

This place was great! The salsa was amazing! Service was great, fast and accurate. The restaurant was clean. There was a nice variety of items to choose from and everything tasted great! Very nice place with reasonable prices. Will go back!

I remember how great this place used to be. I used to walk there before I could drive just for the sopa-pillows when it was on third and date streets. When they opened their new location it was exciting and the food was great. I have been there twice in 2010 when I go back home. Both times were very disappointing. The last time was December 29th and the food took forever to come out. It had to be at least 35 minutes. When it came out it was all cold and we had to send two entrees back because they were cooked incorrectly. My compuesta was cold and the sopapilla seemed to be stale. When we wanted to leave we could not find our server or any employee anywhere. There was only us and one other table there. We eventually left cash on the table for what we thought would cover the tab and walked out. The one positive thing is that this meal was allot better than the last time I came. All I can say is that I won't be going back and that really hurts because this was once one of my favorite places to go.

I was really impressed with the food and service here. We came in as a party of 12 and they had us seated in only a few minutes. Moments later we all sat down with large bowls of salsa, ranch dip and chips. The food was delivered to our table promptly and everything was still hot like it just came out of the kitchen The portions were gigantic and the service was friendly and fast. The ambiance and decor also complimented the great meal. Overall great value, great, quick service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good restaurant in Truth or Consequences NM.

Like other reviews for this place that are floating around, I found the steak to be large and seasoned well. Now, if it had just been delivered to me in under 30-40 minutes (at our table) and still hot, it would have been even better. Hot onion rings and an $8 salad that wasn't swimming in dressing would have been really great as well. If you even think of ordering the child's taco with fries, walk over to a nearby table and have a local pimp-slap you back to your senses. When it hit the table it was only barely warm like the fries, but it had sat on the counter for so long in its own grease that I couldn't even pick it up - the bottom half of the shell was just mush. I did taste it though and it was the nastiest thing I'd eaten on this trip. Eating at this place depends on getting seated. The girl at the counter (Tuesday - not packed) took down the names of the two groups of people on either side of us to get seated and only the decency of a fellow diner allowed us to get on the list. This inattentiveness doesn't seem to stop at the front desk either. We were seated at a table that was dripping wet from the sloppy bus towel that was laying on the next booth over. A handful of paper towels cleaned up most of it and we were able to keep things from floating off of the table. I gave this place two stars because the air conditioner worked well and the beer that my wife ordered was cold. If you feel like your wallet needs to be lightened by about three $20 bills - go for it. My wife and I like to try local places like this, but with the slim pickin's in TorC, we might just stop in Socorro next time so we can eat at the Black Dog.

La Cocina was a surprise. Truth or Consequences is a small burg, not the kind of place you'd move to if your food needs include sushi or late night tapas. We ate here last time I was in T or C because it was recommended by the nice lady at the local visitor center. First thing is - the food is huge, and cheap. While their menu does include a $25 Porterhouse, most of their plates are around $6-7. I ordered a grilled chicken burrito. A platter sized monster, swimming in green chilies, this was a real treat. It's basic Southwestern Mexican food for an American palate. The tamales here are excellent too - no skimping on the spice in their shredded beef. The sopapillas here are the size of your head - a half order of two could easily feed four people. They also have "American" food on their menu, and their fried chicken was mentioned to me as being very good, but I didn't try it. They cut and age their own meat here, which is a plus, and the staff is really attentive and nice.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
